Adding Large Quantities of Fonts

Post by msleger » Fri Mar 30, 2007 3:39 pm

When adding fonts to a group, there seems to be a limit of how many fonts can be added simultaneously. If I select a folder containing 2000 fonts and Select All, the "File name:" field apparently has a maximum number of allowed characters because the value gets truncated (usually within a quoted filename, resulting in an invalid filename) and FontExpert returns an error for the truncated/invalid file. Either the maximum character limit should be increased (unless it's a Windows issue), or FontExpert should automatically ignore the terminating truncated filename.

Did you use "Add Fonts..." or "Add to Group..." command?

(The former command shows "Choose Fonts" common dialog box where you can select files. It probably has limitation that depends on the length of selected file names. The latter command shows the "Add to Group" dialog box, it must not have limitation and you can choose few thousand fonts.)

I normally use Add Fonts with the Link option instead of Add To Group because I've had problems with Add To Group not working correctly. (I can't remember at the moment what those problems were.) Add Fonts brings up a standard Windows File Open dialog from which I select multiple files, but if I select too many then the "File name:" field value gets truncated.

Yes, common dialog box has the limitaion depending on the total length of selected file names, so it is better to use the Add to Group dialog when you are adding large number of fonts to a group.

Also please make sure you are using the latest version 8.0. "Add to Group" dialog has been enhanced since version 7.0.
