Updating Font Library

Post by Bluesman »

Hi. Wonder which is the right/best way to update your font library after erasing or inserting new fonts? Does FontExpert do this automatically when starting up or must I "Add fonts to library" by just choos the folder that has the changed items?

Gracias

Font Library contains fonts that you explicitly added to library from anywhere (from your folders). Groups are links to the fonts in Library. If you delete any font items within Groups node, the fonts still remain in Library. What is only needed and recommended is making Backup of font library and groups. The backup is a ZIP file, containing nested folders with all fonts, plus small database file with tags an the group information. So simply speaking, when you make a backup, you add your fonts to a ZIP archive.

Do you mean source folders? For example, if you have c:\MyFonts1\ folder with fonts and add them to FontExpert library, FontExpert copies font files from source folder to a special folder, called LIB (and font information to database file).
FontExpert only copies unique fonts. If you add new 3 fonts to your MyFonts1 folder, and then again add all fonts from MyFonts1 folder to Library, then only 3 new fonts will be copied.

FontExpert Library is a collection of unique font files you ever added to library.

Ok... what I understand then is that if I add fonts to "MyFonts1" folder they will automatically update in FontExpert. If I delete fonts from "MyFonts1" folder... does these also be deleted from FontExperts database indexing??

One more... :)
If I'm in the "Folders" view...? Can I from here admin the fonts in the "source folders"? Add fonts and erase? And they will be physically erased or added? And this actions will be updated in the database and library?

Font items in Groups node of Fonts view are links to physical fonts in Library. For example, if you have 5 fonts named MyFont in 5 different groups, all of them will refer to the same physical font in Library. (One note. FontExpert adds unique font files to Library. If at least one byte in file is different, the files are considered as different. Thus, you can add several versions of the same font to Library, and it is up to user, to keep all of them, or to delete older versions of font from Library.)

The fonts in your original source folder are not linked to any fonts within Groups. You can just delete source folder after you added its fonts to FontExpert Library.

Hmmmm. I think I missunderstood the whole structure from the beginning then...? In my thoughts the fonts had to be intact in the source folder/folders? Because they are linked from here. But you tell that I can Erase the source folders after installing the fonts to "FontExpert" ... that makes a new turn in my understanding :)
But now I'm trying to find the path to the place where the fonts are in "FontExpert"... ??

Gracias

The fonts are in special folder, called LIB, you can find it from Options.
Tools/Options.../General, FontExpert app data folder, press "Go to Folder" button.
But do not move or delete files within this folder, as FontExpert database refer to the fonts in this folder.
When you do Backup, the fonts from this folder are copied to backup ZIP file.
This is a collection of all unique font files you added to Library.

Great... thanks. Think I got it now. Was all the time until now reffering the fonts to the source folders I had installed since earlier managing with other softwares as "Nexus Font". Good then I just back up and erase the source folders. Save some memory :)

Have a nice weekend
