Enhanced detection of duplicate fonts

Postby spinsane » Wed Nov 30, 2005 4:56 am

I was looking through my fonts when I came upon two that were identical in appearance. But since the face name was different FontExpert saw these as NOT beeing duplicates.

It would be a nice feature if FontExpert could also check the actual font data when deciding if a font is a duplicate or not.

Thanks.

I have not used the software yet, but will be purchasing it momentarily after reviewing a few more discussion threads. However, I do have comments regarding the duplicate font issue, as this is the primary reason for my purchase of a bigger font manager. There are three types of 'duplicate' fonts:

1. Fonts have the same name and are visually the same font.
2. Fonts have different names but are visually the same font.
3. Fonts have the same name but are visually different fonts.

My understanding of FontExpert thus far (without actually having used it yet) is that it identifies duplicate fonts via font name and/or file name. This is inaccurate.

So, in addition to recognizing duplicates that have different names, I'd also like to suggest NOT recognizing fonts that have the same name but are in fact different fonts.

You are right, version 7.0 "search for duplicates" feature doesn't compare font glyphs in a font file (your issue 2.), it is an enhancement planned in the following verison. It only detects duplicates compared by face name (your issue 1.).

In the case fonts have the same name but are visualy different you can turn on the additional option to compare by "file size". File sizes of two fonts will be in 99.99% different and FontExpert will not mark them as duplicates.
