Antialiasing, independent of OS

Post by telligent »

OK, first off, I'm quite pleased with FontExpert. The one feature I miss from the old font manager I used to use is the ability to turn on antialiasing ("font smoothing") to get a much better feel for the look of the font.

Yes, I can enable font smoothing in Windows XP, but I normally leave that off, and enabling it each time I go into FontExpert is obviously too much work. And the Font Faces list is not smoothed in either case.

Thank you for suggestion! This issue is in our TO DO list for the following version.

i'll second that: for a fast decision what font to use for a specific design, anti-aliasing is absolutely essential. otherwise, i have to install the font and actually TYPE some lorem ipsum in PS or any other AA-capable app in order to see what the font will look like. that is, of course, time-consuming and annyoing.

in fact, this and the ability to have both the GROUPS and FILES (or any other two) sections of the workspace open side-by-side (for more convenient drag-and-drop) are the ONLY two features short of making this the _ultimate_ font utility!!

In this moment of our development the antialiasing feature is already implemented for Font Faces view and we are only thinking how to support it better in user interface. There will be a child toolbar on top of Font Faces view and we are planning to add a toolbar button to turn antialiasing on and off (the default is ON). FontExpert supports huge number of previewed font files and we need to test antialiasing against thousands of fonts listed in Font Faces view.
Your another question - to have Files and Groups windows side by side: currently you can pick files and drag them over the Groups tab label. This will activate the Groups view so you can drop files on it. (We understand that this dragging over the tabs is rather a trick than an intuitive feature.)
We are conservative when think about any possible significant changes in the user interface of FontExpert and we have not found yet a good GUI solution how to make Files and Groups opened simultaneosly. It seems the only (but important) reason for it is the one you described - to drag and drop files easily. We have thought about an ability to show/hide some popup window listing the tree of font groups, but this idea is also has disadvantages.

Support: Antialiasing in Font Faces view is implemented in FontExpert 2005 Release 1 and later.

Has this feature been added? I can't find it in FontExpert 2005 Release 3.

Thanks.

Antialiasing was implemented in version 7.0 Release 1, but for font files that are not installed this feature still depends on the smooth option in Display Properties. It is nesassary to turn this option on in Control Panel.

We still plan to include antialiasing independent of OS in the following version. For this moment we have not achieved good quality and speed of antialiased drawing, so we have turned this feature off temporarily.
